How to select
Fix the beam type first — twin-wave 310 mm or triple-wave 505 mm — then whether the plate is 3 mm or 4 mm. The post section, Φ114 mm or Φ140 mm round with a 4.5 mm wall, and the post length from the 1.85 / 1.95 / 2.00 / 2.15 m range follow the ground and how the post is set. Post spacing and the setting-out of the end terminals are then confirmed on the order drawing, with the standard the project follows.
A W-beam guardrail is the corrugated steel line that runs along the edge of a carriageway, a median or a bridge approach. It is the profile most Chinese expressway and highway work is drawn to, and it is specified wherever a vehicle that leaves the road has to be guided back along the line rather than stopped dead — 4320 mm panels on a 4 m post spacing, in twin-wave or triple-wave section, with the posts, caps, terminals, spacer blocks and bolt sets counted from the same layout.
Photographs below show the product family; the specification on this page is the manufacturer's published figure and is quoted unchanged.
01 · Product overview
What the road guardrail is made of
The published figures are a 4320 mm corrugated panel leaving a net 4 m between posts, posts set at that same 4 m spacing, a twin-wave beam 310 mm wide or a triple-wave beam 505 mm wide, both with an 85 mm wave height, on Φ114 mm or Φ140 mm round posts with a 4.5 mm wall.
A W-beam guardrail works by guiding a vehicle rather than by stopping it dead. The corrugated panel is bolted along a line of posts, so a vehicle that leaves the carriageway meets the face of the beam and is turned back along it. The published specification for the system cites the Ministry of Transport industry specification JT/T 281—2007《高速公路波形梁钢护栏板》, which is the standard this panel profile is drawn to in China.
The dimensional figures are fixed. Each panel is 4320 mm long, leaving a net 4 m between posts once the panels are lapped and bolted, and the posts are set at that same 4 m spacing. The twin-wave beam is 310 mm wide with an 85 mm wave height in 3 mm or 4 mm plate, with a theoretical mass of 49.16 kg for the 3 mm panel and 65.44 kg for the 4 mm panel, or 12.3 t and 16.388 t per kilometre respectively. The triple-wave beam is 505 mm wide with the same 85 mm wave height in 4 mm plate at a theoretical mass of 102 kg, and is used with a 130 × 130 mm square-tube post.
Posts are Φ114 mm or Φ140 mm round tube with a 4.5 mm wall, at 12.15 kg/m and 15.04 kg/m respectively, normally 1.85 m, 1.95 m, 2.00 m or 2.15 m long depending on the requirement and how the post is set in the ground. A standard kilometre takes 250 panels, 250 posts at 4 m spacing, 2 end terminals, 250 post caps, 250 spacer blocks, 250 connector bolt sets and 2000 splicing bolt sets, so the accessories are counted from the same layout as the beams. The manufacturer states that the panels have good corrosion resistance and are resistant to ageing.
Highway standards differ from country to country, and this panel profile is drawn to a national one. Tell us the standard your project follows — AASHTO, EN or another national specification — and we confirm in writing what we can supply against it before production.
Two other products from the same guardrail family are usually asked about at the same time: the excavation edge guardrail for edge protection at excavations, basement pits and slab edges, and the zinc-steel perimeter railing for a boundary line in hot-dip galvanised steel tube. Their figures are published on their own pages and are quoted separately from this beam system.
